About Me

Hi there and welcome to my blog!  My name is Jessica  and I am a certified Family Nurse Practitioner working in the great state of Maine with a focus on geriatrics. (So much focus that the mere thought of treating children these days actually causes me to develop hives. Ha!) I started my nursing career about 20 years ago, working in the ER in Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia for a decade, the last few years of which was spent completing my NP program.  Then my family and I made the epic journey up the coast to north central Maine where we put down roots in 2016–very cold and snowy roots (though if you ask any Mainer, I will forever be “from away,” so “roots” is a relative term).

For the last 7.5 years of my career I have been immersed in the world of skilled rehab and long term care, working hard to keep our growing community of elders safe, happy and healthy (whether they like it or not). And let me tell you, I am a little worried.  As the United States grapples with the graying of its population, a “silver tsunami” is upon us. With longer life expectancies and the baby boomer generation entering its golden years, the need for comprehensive elder care has never been more critical.  However, the truth is that providing this care has never been more difficult, given the myriad of challenges and limited options available.  So if you have an interest in geriatrics, are a “silver sensation”  yourself, or have an aging loved one that you are caring for,  join me and follow my blog.  I cannot promise to fix the problems of the future, but maybe, just maybe, I can provide some information, ideas and insights on how to facilitate aging at home with grace, dignity, and a little bit of humor…

And now for the disclaimer!

This blog is intended for entertainment and informational purposes only. The goal is to inspire conversation and mindfulness about aging with grace…at home.  There will be posts full of suggestions and information, but these posts should never take the place of your trusted healthcare professional and should not be relied upon as professional advice.  Remember, I don’t know you or your particular circumstances.  So if something on my blog inspires you to make changes to your home, lifestyle or mindset, make sure you run it by your primary care provider who manages your health.
